With performances broadcast live in 40 countries on the classical music channel Mezzo, Lithuanian pianist Morta Grigaliūnaitė has established herself as an active soloist and chamber music pianist.
In 2019, she releases her debut album, entitled “Bacewicz Piano Music”, which continues to receive excellent reviews for her interpretation of Grażyna Bacewicz’s piano works. Described by critics as “powerful and dramatic”, her recordings were featured on BBC Radio 3, and featured in Fanfare and Diapason magazines.
Morta Grigaliūnaitė came to public attention for the first time in 2005 when she performed at the “National Philharmonic of Lithuania” Concert Hall in Vilnius at the invitation of Mstislav Rostropovich. Since then, she has performed as a soloist with several prestigious orchestras such as Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, St. Kitts Chamber Orchestra, Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, Georgia State Chamber Orchestra, Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra and the Azerbaijan State Chamber Orchestra. The Lithuanian pianist performed in concert halls all over the world, among which stand out: Berliner Philharmonie, Wigmore Hall, Kings Place, St. John’s Smith Square, UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, National Gallery in London, Cantabria Festival Palace in Santander, Batumi Arts Center in Georgia, and Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Hall in Baku. Morta Grigaliūnaitė has performed with distinguished artists such as renowned violin teacher Zakhar Bron, former principal oboist of the Berlin Philharmonic Hansjörg Schellenberger, and Valentin Erben, founding member of the Alban Berg Quartet.
Morta Grigaliūnaitė had her first piano lesson in her hometown of Pasvalys. After meeting Mstislav Rostropovich, who encouraged her to pursue a career in music, she entered the National School of Arts M. K. Čiurlionis in Vilnius. At the age of 16, Morta Grigaliūnaitė moved to the UK to study with William Fong at the Purcell School of Music and soon after received a full scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied with Hamish Milne. Graduated with First Class Honors during her time in London, Morta Grigaliūnaitė has received several distinctions for outstanding students, as well as numerous awards in soloist and chamber music competitions. During this period, she was kindly supported by the Rostropovich Help and Support Foundation and the Michel Sogny Foundation. Her further studies took place at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia in Madrid, where she was a student of Claudio Martínez Mehner and Dmitri Bashkirov. She is currently Professor of Piano at the Purcell School of Music in London, the oldest music school in Great Britain.
