Born into a family of musicians in Vienna, violinist Johannes Fleischmann received his first instrumental training at the age of five. After graduating from the Viennese Musikgymnasium, he founded the o(h)!-ton Ensemble, Wien in 2003. That same year, he began his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna under Klaus Maetzl and Christian Altenburger, graduating with distinction in 2011. Johannes received scholarships from the Angelika Prokopp Foundation of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tokyo Foundation.
He continued his education with Johannes Meissl and Hatto Beyerle, specializing in chamber music, and participated in various masterclasses with artists such as Erich Höbarth, Rainer Honeck, András Keller, Peter Nagy, Ruggiero Ricci, András Schiff, and Dora Schwarzberg. For his “outstanding performance in chamber music,” he was awarded the Piano Chamber Music Award at the ISA Festival.
Johannes Fleischmann made his solo debut with Brahms’ Violin Concerto at the Wiener Konzerthaus. As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with renowned artists including Julius Berger, Andreas Brantelid, André Cazalet, Nicolas Dautricourt, José Gallardo, Philippe Graffin, Eszter Haffner, André Heller, Christopher Hinterhuber, Andrej Jonica, Hyung-ki Joo, Sebastian Knauer, Johannes Meissl, Daniel Müller-Schott, Paul Neubauer, Sophie Pacini, Razvan Popovici, Michael Schade, Philipp Scheucher, Norman Shetler, Marianna Shirinyan, Torleif Thedéen, and members of the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics. He has performed at numerous festivals including Prussia Cove, Europäische Kulturtage Frankfurt, Attersee Klassik, Festival Pablo Casals de Prades, Steirische Kammermusik Festival, and Quincena Musical de San Sebastián, and at venues such as the Wiener Musikverein, Wiener Konzerthaus, the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Philharmonie im Gasteig Munich, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Brucknerhaus Linz, and Flagey Brussels.
In addition to his many engagements as a soloist and chamber musician, Johannes regularly performs with renowned orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. These collaborations have allowed him to work closely with leading conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Sir Colin Davis, Valery Gergiev, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Mariss Jansons, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Georges Prêtre, Sir Simon Rattle, and Christian Thielemann.
He has also gained extensive media experience through collaborations with ZDF, ARD, RBB, MDR, NHK, ORF, Pro7, RTL, Ö1, Radio Klassik, and Slovenian National Radio, including television and radio appearances.
A passionate advocate for contemporary music, Johannes has worked with prominent composers throughout his career. Collaborations with Christoph Ehrenfellner, Serkan Gürkan, Fabio Vacchi, Paul Gallister, Rudolf Kelterborn, Ernst-Ludwig Leitner, and others have shaped his artistic journey and led to several world premieres. “Hunt Sonata” by Ehrenfellner and “Mein Wien” by Gürkan were both dedicated to him.
Johannes Fleischmann is also known for his social commitment. He promotes positive social change and development worldwide through regular participation in community projects aimed at supporting underprivileged individuals. He frequently gives masterclasses and workshops for children and students in need, and he initiated a project to collect instruments for under-resourced music schools in Africa. He has supported El Sistema Turkey, Superar Austria, the University of Medellín, the Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, the Michael Joseph Center in Nairobi, and projects for children in the slums of Korogocho (Nairobi), Bogotá, Limassol, Paphos, Nicosia, Xàbia, Yerevan, and more.
Appointed by the Austrian Foreign Ministry as an ambassador for the NASOM (New Austrian Sound of Music) program, Johannes has toured extensively around the globe.
He is a founding member of the international electro-classical project SYMPHONIACS and a member of the NEUE WIENER CONCERT SCHRAMMELN.
Since 2018, Johannes Fleischmann has served as the artistic director of the Palais Coburg Matinee, an annual concert series featuring internationally renowned chamber musicians. He also curated his own concert series at MuTh Vienna for two seasons (2020–2022). In October 2020, he began teaching violin at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna as assistant to Elisabeth Kropfitsch.
In 2021, he released his new album “EXODUS – The Men Who Shaped Hollywood” (Odradek Records), featuring works by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Eric Zeisl, which was nominated for the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik 2021 and the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) 2022.
In 2022, he founded and became the artistic director of the “Althofener Meisterklassen” masterclasses and music festival in Carinthia, Austria.
Following the critical success of his debut Odradek album Exodus, in 2023, Johannes released his second album “Solitaire” in collaboration with pianist Christoph Ulrich Meier. The album was featured on The Violin Channel, Pizzicato, and Violinist.
Johannes Fleischmann currently plays a 2016 violin by Stephan von Baehr.
